Getting your site listed in a search engine is very important. While the numbers go up and down as to how much traffic they do send you, any traffic sent is better than none at all. Search engines look at several different things when they are looking to see if your site fits their requirements or not. The following are just the guidelines as many search engines also have their own rules that you must follow to get listed in. While some will allow just about any web site to get in, others are much more difficult to get listed with. Gear your pages to reflect the requirements of the mass or those which will send you the most traffic. Don't waste time getting listed in all the search engines if your note in the top ones, start there. Then work on all of the others that might send you the one or two hits. I would rather get my one thousand hits a day from yahoo than work my butt off to get 5 hits from some search engine no one has heard about. 1) Make sure your pages don't have any lost or broken links. Also make sure that your pages are complete and don't say nor show that they are still under construction. While people may look at it and come back later, a search engine will ignore it and move on to a better site. And if it does by some chance list you, it will put you in the results for pages under construction. Not exactly the traffic you are looking for. 2) Make sure there are no spelling errors on your page. If you are selling tires and you spell it hires I don't think you will care for the lack of traffic. Remember to word things just like people would put it in a search engine to find you. Do yourself a favor. Go to a search engine and search for the words and see what kind of results you get. If it is poor, then that is not something that most people would put in to find you with. The key to gaining traffic is to anticipate what words the majority will use to find your site. You can't get everyone so gear your energy to getting the most first. 3) You might find it useful to visit our page on Meta Tags. Not only will you find additional hints for your site, you will see an example of meta tags in action. Keep in mind these are only guides to help you along. Trial and error work really well. The idea here is to have much less error so that for each trial you get better results. 4) Look at the people that you are doing business with and ask them to link to your site. Make sure to offer a link back to them. This will provide both of you with new customers which will also help grow your working relationship with each other. Why do I mention these links here? Well, search engines do look at how many people are linking to your site. If you only have 1 or 2 people linked to you, then the search engines will think you are a small business and not much traffic will make it to you. Where if they see that lots of companies are linking to you, then they know you have something that others are interested in. Thus more traffic for both sites that are linked together. Just make sure not to fall in to the pit of links else you will scare people away before they even read about your product. 5) Search engines hate pop up screens almost as much as people do. While most search engines will allow you to have one pop up screen or 1 exit console, they don't care for them. So if you are using several of them, get ready to get kicked out of the search engines you are already in! 6) Don't Spam the search indexes either. They are getting smarter each and every day. Don't write black words on a black background so that the search engines will send you traffic. Most of them will look at the color and see that you are sending them junk. Or if you write too small of a font, they think you are again working to hide text. Even if it is something valid, don't make the print too small or risk the chance that you will get lost in the search engine placement. |
